Mise-en-scéne

Mise-en-Scéne
Mise-en-Scéne means everything in the shot E.g lighting, costumes, colour, facial expressions and composition.

Low lighting and darkness suggests isolation, the one light source doesn't cover them. Thy sit away from the group of people creating isolation. They move further away, isolating themselves. They run alongside a fence creating a cage. Before she jumped in the water all you hear is music, conversation and laughing. They leave all of the sounds behind. Audience now think something bad is going to happen. The sunset implies that she is running out of time. Calm water and lack of sound suggests that something is going to happen. The audience is brought in close to the action because the camera is at sea level. The sounds underwater are non-diegetic, low sound is bad and the music becomes the sharks theme.

Generic elements and camera angles used to create suspense in the attic scene of the Exorcist.

  • One element is that it's late at night
  • Another element is the victim going alone to a empty part of the house. This makes the victim seem isolated.
  • No Music can create suspense because all you hear is what she hears
  • One camera angle can show you nothing but the victim. This can build suspense because you can see any of hear surroundings.
  • The candle keeps flickering which can make the room dark for a split second.
  • The camera changes to a POV shot to show the audience what the victim sees.
  • The victim is a typical young helpless woman. She is also filmed from above to show that she is weak, from behind to show she is being followed and filmed from behind objects to show that she is being watched.
  • All suspense is gone when the man is revealed because you suspect that the man made all the noises.
